Survival Perspective: False Sense Of Security Kills

decoded_picture

[ Brad Meltzer’s Decoded: “2012 The Beginning:” ]

I am in total awe of the survivalist out there that have undertaken the job of preparing their homes and families for long-term survivability. It's absolutely great to see these folks thinking outside of the box--but there's always the old adage of "Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Basket"; and in this case it holds true.

If you suddenly found yourself faced with the real possibility of having to leave the safety and comfort of your home; what impact would this have on your survival plans? Would you choose to remain in your home no matter what--or have you made plans to evacuate when the situation demands it?

Sadly, many survivalists will choose the "Shelter In Place" option because they probably have no choice, since they have "prepped" their home for survival--instead of themselves.

Getting ready for "The End" could mean any number of things. Each scenario has its own peculiarities, and each scenario offers different level of threats and dangers. It would be difficult to prepare for each eventuality--though not impossible.

No matter what scenario comes to mind; the recognition must be present that all preparations should be undertaken with the "worse case" concept. There can be no minimizing the truth, or outright denial of what could occur. This leads to fantasy based survival assumptions, instead of reality based survival plans.

The basic assumption of "I'll be alright, or, it won't happen to me"; lulls many into a false sense of security. It denies the omnipresent reality and challenges the universe. Thinking that one is immune from adversities, or somehow invulnerable to the effects of a crisis, is a foolish way to protect one's family. It leaves the doors wide-open for utter failure...

Just because the basement is full of food and supplies. Just because there are several topped-off fuel tanks, and just because every facet of long-term survivability has been considered--doesn't make the home's occupants impervious to ancillary effects of a crisis.

Having a Bug Out Location tucked away in the high mountains is great! There's no doubt this concept will work. But what happens when your BOL is discovered by sheer accident, or pure luck? Imagine how you would have to react when faced with a single mother dragging along three hungry kids, or several heavily armed thugs that noticed your electric lights, or smoke emanating from the fireplace?

These are very real possibilities that one could face in future events. Adopting the "Bunker Mentality" is one of the sure-fire ways to greet this new age with an entirely adversarial approach.

The fact is; that there are people out there that will burn your house down when you don't give them what they ask for. There are also people forming small groups out there (right now) that are training in military tactics. In both of these cases, your BOL may be compromised by virtue of just being visible. Unless you have additional help in protecting what is yours, there is a very good chance that all of these survival preparations will either go up in smoke, or you will not live to enjoy them. One simply has to look back into other crisis situation in our history, and learn the bare naked truth about how evil and desperate humanity becomes when SHTF.

To me personally; these long-term plans are based upon the "Sustainability" concept that allows a family to continue the perpetuity of a normal life--AFTER AN EVENT. Preparations must be undertaken to survive the initial event creating the crisis....

  • Chemical Event
  • Radiological Event
  • Biological Event

The three events listed above represent scenarios that might force a rapid evacuation from the BOL. If the automatic response is "I Have Gas Masks and Air Filters"; then the person making the statement has probably never spent any time wrapped-up inside a gas mask, and a chemical suit. How "exactly" does one intend to feed themselves, or evacuate their bowels? Again; it's a matter of looking at these things with a critical understanding based upon real world (probable) scenarios.

  • Several months ago four members of a terrorist group were planning to manufacture anthrax, and then drive around Atlanta liberally pouring this toxin out of the back of several vehicles.
  • Some of the 911 Hijackers had considered using crop-dusters to spray large areas of major cities with anthrax and bubonic plague infected fleas. Several crop-dusters have went missing since 911--They have never been located.
  • In another incident, plans were made to steal chemical laden tankers for use against civilian population centers; and at the same time--poison the drinking water supply. Three such tankers were reported stolen from Chicago on the day 911 occurred, and to date--have not been recovered.
  • Jihadists have established 79 training centers located within the borders of the United States. They openly train and prepare for jihad against America.
  • The unprotected southern borders along Texas, Arizona, and California are seeing record numbers of illegal's coming across the borders. The Border Patrol has published statistics recently attesting to larger number of Non-Hispanics infiltrating into America. Most are armed and equipped with military grade weapons and gear.
  • Reports are trickling in from alternative news sources indicating that small groups of Non-Hispanics clothed in cammie uniforms, and carrying assault weapons; are living in/around tribal (native) lands. Many small grocery stores report an influx of "soldier" pouring into their stores at night--buying water, smokes, and other items.
  • Wildfires are increasing in numbers; this is evidenced by several major fire storms sweeping through large swaths of different areas in the country.
  • Solar storms are increasing in intensity; NASA predicts increased solar activities in 2012. They are not saying “IF”; they are saying “WHEN”—and telling their employees to get ready for the event.

No matter what one might think, or no matter what active measures one has undertaken; nothing belays the fact that the United States is home to some 310-Million people. At some point the survivalist community will have to deal with a portion of these people; whether by choice, or by.

Having well-stocked home is wonderful; but reality also dictates that it is just four walls with  roof. It isn’t a sanctuary or safe haven that will protect one from ALL of the evils in the world. On the contrary; it makes for an easier target for those that through their own actions—haven’t prepared and suddenly find themselves “disconnected: from their own lives.

Survival: Protecting What’s Yours

DSC03279

The use of firearms when SHTF is probably one of the most talked-about issues on the internet these days. In many cases, firearms sometimes rank higher than food supplies in some circles.

The trend in survival firearms has taken a radical right turn; instead of defensive weapons, many have turned towards assault rifles, and offensive weapons. It’s not uncommon to see survivalists wearing tactical gear, Kevlar helmets, ballistic vest, and sporting an assortment of battle-ready guns with multiple magazines of ammunition.

The problem with that is; it doesn’t leave much room for survival gear. Heading out into the woods with tactical gear, and preparing for a gun battle is okay if that is your mindset. But the reality is that all of that gear won’t help you one bit—when faced with multiple opponents. On the contrary, it will only serve to make their job easier because it’s hard to run wearing all of that gear.

When I train newbies out in the field, the rule is only carry the things that you will actually need, and replace everything else with food supplies. Nothing is as important as food—nothing!

One of the things that I attempt to have people understand, is that even though firearms are an integral part of any survival plan, they should not be the entire plan.

No matter what the weapon of choice is; it is necessary to first become intimate with the weapon. That means spending a lot of time at the range, shooting at various distances, and shooting during weather extremes. It takes hundreds of hours to “Become One” with your weapon. But when the honeymoon is over, you’ve got something in your hands that is both familiar and might provide for an extra edge if you are ever forced to shoot somebody down.

It really doesn’t matter the make or model of the rifle, what matters is the weight, the maneuverability, and whether or not you can hit what you are aiming at in any survival or weather condition. One of my more favorite weapons is an old Soviet battle rifle: The Mosin-Nagant M1944 7.62x54R bolt action rifle. The rifle is sometimes referred to as a “Russian .308”; and that would be a close description.

DSC03102

[ Mosin-44 Out in The Alaska Back Country ]

The Mosin-44 is a trusted old rifle that is still being used today in many parts of the world. Here in Alaska, these old rifles are found in the hands of Eskimo hunters, and homesteaders alike. It’s reputation and durability makes this a rifle that has earned its place by the people that count on it for their day to day existence.

I’ve owned and fired tons of weapons throughout the years. Some weren’t worth a plugged nickel, while others were worth their weight in gold. One of my more favorite defensive weapon is a Diamond Back .380 caliber handgun. It’s small size makes it an ideal carry-weapon,. It certainly doesn’t pack the same punch as a .45 ACP, but again—it’s all a matter of getting to know your weapon, as well as your own capabilities. What is amazing for this small caliber cartridge, is the penetration factor. As a primary combat weapon it’s all but useless due to to lack of energy; but up-close-personal, this weapon will do what’s asked of it.

1223111158a

[ DB-380 Semi-Auto Handgun ]

Survivalists should consider firearms as yet another tool that gets the job done. Over-reliance on weapons is the one problem that should be avoided. To me personally; a rifle that I carry in the bush has to be suited for hunting and defensive situations. The standard that I apply to myself is that I carry one rifle, and one handgun; perhaps if the situation requires it, I may also hump a folding-stock shotgun. But in my own survival plans, everyone in my group is armed, and even if it’s just my family and I tromping around in the bush—we all carry weapons.

DSC04732

When SHTF; protecting the family and yourself, as well as protecting your stockpile will require firearms that are capable of doing the job with little or no frills. A basic pump shotgun, an assault rifle, or even a bolt action rifle will make life miserable for those individuals who foolishly believe that a “force of arms” will feed them.

I much prefer the heavy caliber weapons such as the belted-magnums. There is no doubt in my mind that a .375 H&H magnum will punch right through ballistic armor. Subsequently, the .454-Casull Magnum will certainly eat bullet-proof vests everyday of the week.

Additionally; in the hands of an experienced shooter, the bolt action .308 caliber rifle loaded with deadly Armor Piercing ammunition is a force of nature unto itself. A determined shooter can far exceed the range and killing power of assault rifle wielding assailants.

When it comes to self-defense in a survival situation, it’s important to understand that if you are doing things correctly; nobody out there should see you, hear, you, or realize that you are in the area. When things go south, and you find yourself confronted with armed thugs, your best option is to get away as quickly as possible. Breaking contact might not sound very “Macho”; but I guarantee that you will not feel so Macho when one of your kids, or your mate is laying dead on the ground.

West Coast Survival Strategies: How To Get Out Alive

fhs_ (1)

The most difficult aspect of getting out of dodge when SHTF, is know when to go, where to go, and how to get there. This is where many survivalists drop the ball because it is a real challenge to figure this part of the survival planning out. There are many obstacles to overcome, and it requires a high level of understanding about the inherent difficulties; as well as meticulous attention to a myriad of details.

Given the fact that California has a population density of 37,253,956 people, this should indicate the severity of Bugging Out, and what it means to those trying to flee the large cities. Whereas Oregon has a population of 3,831,074. What's the difference between 37.2 million people, and 3.8 million people? The answer is Movement...

It's already clear that California's highway and interstate system are overcrowded; imagine trying to get across LA when a very large percentage of the population is hitting the streets in utter panic. If you have never experience the Santa Monica Freeway at rush hour on a three day weekend--then you cannot begin to imagine that chaos.

The very first thing that must be considered when working out an escape plan, is to know your area within your own neighborhood, and also the area leading out of it.

Step Number 1:

  1. Get a detailed city map that shows all the streets and major highways.
  2. Locate your home on the map and draw a green square around the location.
  3. Find the quickest way out of the area using major roads and highways--Mark These in RED MARKER.
  4. Identify every street leading out of the area on city streets, but NOT major highways or 4-land streets. In order words, look for neighborhood streets that will take you across town. Mark these with a GREEN MARKER.

3040806863_24a6899875_z

Step Number 2:

Take a drive on at least three or four of the streets that you have marked in GREEN. This will be the most important part of the survival plan. The intent is to become familiar with the route, and the resources that you will encounter. bring the map with you, as well as a writing pad and pens.

Here is what you will need to look for:

  • Bridges; whether you drive over it, or under it.
  • Culverts and large drainage pipes.
  • Overhead walkways.

Mark the exact location of each bridge with a RED SQUARE

Mark the exact location of each culvert with a GREEN CIRCLE

Mark the exact location of walkways with a RED SQUARE

MAP_Franke_Schein_001

The purpose of this is to have the ability to quickly re-route yourself if the primary route is blocked. Knowing where all the bridges and culverts are located will make this a much easier job. This will prevent you from wasting time, and wasting precious gasoline to get to safety. You will need to know every route out of the area, as well as every obstruction that could fall down in an earthquake, or flood-out during a severe storm. Knowing where all of these obstructions and choke points are located; gives you an advantage that the unprepared people won't have. Culverts can also be useful as emergency temporary shelters, as long as there is no standing water inside the culvert.

culvert

Step Number Three:

As you do the initial drive through of the various routes, keep a sharp eye out for the following locations:

  • Multi-level Parking Garages
  • Underground Parking Garages
  • Public Storage Lots
  • Fuel Distribution Companies
  • Hardware Stores
  • Medical Supply Distributors
  • Propane Tanks
  • Chemical Tanks

These locations will be called "Resources". They could provide you with much needed fuel, another vehicle in case yours breaks-down, or additional supplies that you can grab in case you have to leave home with just the clothes on your back.

Mark each of these locations with a BLACK DIAMOND, and make a small side-note indicating what the location offers you.

NOTE: be very careful; you might get yourself shot when trying to forage/steal somebody’s property. If you can’t get in and out with what you need in less than three minutes, then you might already have a problem. It helps when you have friends watching your back in this case.

Getting Your Car Ready:

In addition to your Bug Out Bag; Your car should be stocked with the following gear and supplies:

  • Spare Tire and Jack.
  • Extra Gasoline
  • Radiator Stop-Leak
  • Canned Air
  • Anti-Freeze
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Heavy Duty Bolt Cutters (For Cutting Pad Locks)
  • Logging Chain with Hooked Ends (For Pulling Gates Down)
  • Crowbar (For Opening Doors)
  • Ratcheting Chain Winch or Come-A-Long (Multi-Purpose)
  • Highway Safety Flares
  • Basic Automotive Tool Kit
  • Towing Cable or Rope
  • Roofing Nails (For dropping behind you to disable tires)

These are the things that will help you to acquire resources if you are forced to, or have to abandon your car to get another one. But let's not stop there; it's time to think about Plan-B…

Plan-B:

What if you are bugging out, and suddenly find yourself confronted with a gridlocked traffic jam, or the roads become impassible?

You will either have to walk out, or reach into the back of the car and grab the bicycles that are waiting for you. The kind of bikes that have panniers and bags attached to it will do the trick very well.

bike_001

Having an alternative mode of transportation will be an added benefit. It might not be as fast as a car, but bicycles can go places that cars can’t and the added bonus is that they don’t require fuel, and don’t make loud noises. Motorcycles and dirt-bikes work equally favorable under these conditions; as do All-Terrain-Vehicles. (ATV’s)

Pack you gear light, and make it easy on yourself. All the tools in the car, as listed above, can be left for whoever finds it. It just might allow somebody else another day of life. Either way, if you are on foot or riding a bike, these things will only hamper you with additional weight.

If you have done the initial survival planning as I have detailed in several different articles over the years, you should keep the following in mind:

  • Have a place already picked out to where you will be bugging out to.
  • Pre-position emergency survival supplies in those areas, and (when possible) along the evacuation route.
  • Have your Bug Out Bag and Ready Bag in the vehicles at all times—no matter what.

Many people have asked me over the years how it’s possible for them to bury emergency supplies when out in public without letting anyone know what they are doing; and the answer is pretty obvious—(look at the picture below)

51Zd16jz40L

Not only are these “Privacy Shelters” a definite plus when camping in crowded areas; they can also be used to hide the fact that you are busy burying supplies in your camping area. Position the shelter in an areas that has some trees, or hills out of view, and get busy insuring your survival.

TIP: Lay a tarp on the ground first, and then pile all of the excavated dirt onto the tarp. After dropping your supplies into the hole, put the dirt back where it was found. This will prevent those tell-tale bare earth spot from giving away that something is buried underneath.

[ NOTE: a camping tent that doesn’t have a built-in floor will also work for this sneaky maneuver… ]

Where To Go:

This is one of the most common questions that survivalists ask. Many do not have a “Retreat” or Safe Area to call their own. I suppose the state parks and national forest will become crowded in just a matter of days after SHTF--That is an unacceptable situation in itself. You must avoid these areas like the plague if at all possible.

In my next book titled “Survival Planning” I will share with you some extremely beneficial spots to be aware of. It will probably surprise you, but I’ve been holding back telling anyone of these areas for a very long time, just in case I ever had to use one of these spots myself.

Getting Ready For The End: Save Your Life First

YSK-1

With all of the predictions surrounding the events of 2012 Doomsday Prophecies, it's easy to forget that there are other cataclysmic scenarios that are equally devastating.

Our world, and our society have become increasingly reliant on modern conveniences such as electricity, sewage, drinking water, telecommunications, and instant gratification.

What would happen to society if these conveniences were suddenly and inexplicitly removed without warning...

For the average family out there that has fallen into this "consumerism" based trap--the end result would be devastating in both the short term, and long term.

No matter what event one is prepping for; the basic survival plan begins with having and adequate food and water supply at home. It has been suggested to maintain a 72-hour kit, but I personally think that steps should be taken to increase this to a minimum of 3-months. Based on historical facts concerning other disasters, and how FEMA coped with these events; three months worth of food and water, as well as other supplies, will provide a much better window of survivability.

The Basics:

  • Powdered Eggs
  • Powdered Milk
  • Instant Soup
  • Instant Coffee
  • Tea Bags
  • Rice
  • Cornmeal
  • Dried Beans
  • Oatmeal
  • Cream Of Wheat
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Dried Fruit
  • Cup-O-Soup
  • Ramine Noodles
  • Pasta Noodles

These food items are relatively easy to find, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The fact that they are DRY, makes them easier to store--no matter what the weather conditions happen to be. There are many microwaveable food packs on the shelves of the grocery stores. These items are already cooked, as they only need to be heated. Boiling the pack in hot water will work just fine—remember to cut a small slit in the top of the bag FIRST.

Canned food is great; but they are subjected to weather, and weigh considerably more. The first thing to remember that even though the expiration date has expired, the food is probably still palatable. The only exception might be prepared foods such as beef stew, chili, spaghetti sauce, or those foods that have a higher acidity. Fresh vegetables will be needed when SHTF. A steady diet of rice and beans will get old real fast. Mixing up the canned food with dried food will be a significant factor during a crisis.

Freeze Dried food and Military rations are probably the best way to start out in this endeavor. The cost is a little higher, but offset by the long-term shelf life, and the portability because of the small size and reduced weight factors.

The secret to remember; don't put all of your emergency food in one place. Spread it out across several different "Supply Cache's" in the area. The last thing that you want is to rush home during a crisis, and suddenly find all of your food buried under fifty tons of wrecked house.

A supply cache could be something as simple as a 5-gallon bucket of survival food that is stored in the back of your car, or buried beside the doghouse. There are many places in your area where these buckets can be hidden, or buried.

The best option is to fill each bucket with enough food to last every member of your family for at least two weeks. Careful selection of the food, and carefully packing it into the bucket, will go a long way in insuring that that you have a insurance policy when SHTF. Boxes containing food-bags should be broken down. he box is just for getting your attention, the real food is inside of the bag-getting rid of the box reduces the overall weight and size, making it easier to store or pack.

My own plan uses these same principals. Several buckets of food are buried here and there, as well as a much larger “Base Camp” cache that is designed for long term sustainability AFTER the crisis has passed. In addition, it would also be wise to bury or maintain some caches containing clothing, tools, ammunition, and basic survival gear. Even the best plans have a tendency to fail, so having “extras” spread out across the area will insure that even if you are forced to flee with only the clothes on your back—there is something waiting on you at one of the supply caches.

All too many times I have been amazed at the sheer magnitude of the preparations that some survival families have undertaken. Alternative energy system, several years worth of food supplies, thousands of gallons of fuels, as well as chicken, cows, pigs, and everything that will sustain their family during a crisis.

BUT: What happens if these families have to suddenly flee their home in order to save their lives?

They are screwed !

Even though lots of time, effort, and money went into their planning; they didn't start at the basic plan of saving their own life first...

Crisis Thinking: Critical Perceptions

[ Warning: Graphic Content ]

SYNOPSIS:

The world has just ended for the people in your neighborhood. Everything around you has collapsed,,,, and modern utilities are a thing of the past.

Early that morning a massive under-sea earthquake comes to life without any warning. The shock waves create a tsunami wave approaching heights of 2000 feet--travelling at an astounding speed of 600 MPH. It's bigger than the Empire State Building.

The Warning Alerts were transmitted at 10:45am while you are at work. The first thing that you thought of, was to call your wife on the cell-phone. The line is busy--you cannot get through.

You don't hesitate, and quickly jump into your car heading for home, and planning on stopping at the school to pick up your two children. It only takes you three minutes to realize that everybody else in the city is doing exactly the same thing, and the roads are already gridlocked--traffic is at a standstill.

Panicked you try the cell-phone again for the thousand time, but it's still busy. You cannot reach your wife. It's then that you notice the fuel gauge is hovering near a quarter of a tank. You were running late for work this morning, and intending to top-off the gas tank after work.

The skies are filled with many helicopters as the elites and rich flee the city into the high mountains. You wished that you could commandeer one of those birds, and bring your family to safety. But you are stuck in standstill traffic.

Ten minutes later you abandon the car and start running towards the head of the line--hoping to convince somebody to help you get home. In your mind you are formulating a sneaky plan to steal a car from whoever is still mobile. There's nothing in the world that will stop you from getting to your kids and home--even if you have to hurt somebody in the process.

FAST FORWARD:

It's been 48-hours since the massive tsunami wave swept through the area. Every building that you knew, has now been knocked down and carried away by the wave. Blotted dead bodies float with the rippling currents. You watch in amazement as your own car floats by, bobbing against a mini-van full of small children--all of whom are drowned. The sight brings instant fear to your mind, as you try to imagine what has become of your own kids. Quickly you push that thought way back into the furthest recesses of your mind. It's not something that you can deal with right now; you have only one single purpose; to get home and take care of your family, and get them all into a safe area.

But first--you have to, somehow, get off this concrete parking garage that has saved you from the tsunami wave. Looking down eight stores into the swirling black waters, you understand the force that nature sent against you, and realize that like the other thirty people sharing the roof with you, there's not one single thing that you can do for yourself, much less your own family. You are stuck here until the waters recede, or the government can rescue you from the only standing structure in the area. For a moment you consider jumping into the water and swimming from building to building until you reach dry ground...

ONE WEEK LATER:

You try to eat the MRE that the soldier has handed you, but the appetite just isn't there. The noise inside the church is almost deafening, as other survivors are informed of the loss of their loved-ones. It's a scene that has been played-out many times over the past week. Nobody has told you anything, you're in the dark, but deep down inside of you, the thought that your entire family has perished is something that you have to force out of your thought patterns.

Reports of wide spread destruction flood in; entire communities and towns have been obliterated--wiped off the map. The people in the affected areas no longer exist--among them your parents, and most of your family have went missing. Your mind replays the events about the last time that you spoke with your mother, the firm handshake of your father as he walked you and the family to the car. Your brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, and close friends are all gone. Some might have survived, but you don't know that for sure.

Millions of people have been drowned or crushed. FEMA and the Red Cross are the only thing keeping you alive. Help has flooded-in from the mid-western areas, but it doesn't belay the fact that most of your immediate family is dead--and deep down you fear that you family will be among those listed as dead.

Think this is fantasy? Look at the pictures below to be reminded of the events during the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunamis that struck Japan.

If you think, for one minute that this couldn't happen in the USA; then look at the picture below and see for yourself exactly where the tectonic plates bump-up against Americas coastline.

Even those people living thousands of miles away from these plates, or the coast, will feel the results of an event such as this. The tsunami might not reach very far inland, but the long-term ramifications are almost as severe.

  • Ground transportation comes to a screeching halt.
  • Domestic oil production wiped out.
  • Massive ecological disaster due to oil and chemical spills.
  • Ground water contamination.
  • Fuel prices immediately skyrocket.
  • Fresh vegetable production disrupted, or stopped altogether.
  • Meat animal production stopped or disrupted.
  • Maritime transportation systems destroyed.
  • Fishing industry wiped out.
  • Consumer Commodities see immediate price spike.
  • Global stock indexes plunge to record lows.
  • Unemployment skyrockets.
  • Martial Law declared within disaster zones.
  • Wireless Telephone & Internet Services affected.
  • Dams and Reservoirs destroyed or affected.
  • Rivers and streams expand flooding further inland.
  • Stench of death in affected areas.
  • Massive numbers of people perish during the event.

Then again; you might have friends or family living in the affected areas…

Survival Keys:

  • Establish and practice a Family Communications Plan.
  • Know every route in and out of your area, like the back of your hand.
  • Keep and maintain a “Ready Bag” in the family cars.
  • Don’t stockpile all of your emergency food at home—spread it out.
  • Keep batteries fully charged (and in the cars) for Hand-Held radios, and teach every family member how to use it.
  • Provide you school-age children with a small “Go Bag” to be stored in the school lockers.
  • Know before-hand who will get the kids from school—maintain radio communications with the spouse.
  • Understand that it might be necessary to save your own life FIRST, before you can help anyone else.
  • Don’t rely upon cell-phones during an emergency—they will FAIL YOU when you need it the most.
  • Don’t count on getting Advance Warning from the Emergency Broadcast System—it has failed before!

Even if you are the sole surviving member of your entire family, it must be stressed that during events such as this; your inner-strength will be severely tested. There is now way for anybody on this planet to know what they will do, or be able to do, when faced with the loss of family members.

But it certainly helps to have a plan, and that leads to attaining the right survival mindset. I promise that if you practice these things enough times; during an emergency, your body's instinct will guide you through the steps that will be required.

You may not always make the right choices, but in the finality of things, your decisions will be based on the survival plans that you have established and practiced. Your ass will follow your mind when the time comes…
